1. Why did you sign up for the joint ALIA/QUT project?
I signed up for the ALIA/QUT project for several reasons:
- I want to give something back to Librarianship through research and I have a great interest in education,
- I am always interested to do something different,
- I see this as a good alternative to my current word processed CV especially as I can scan and save documentation to the e-portfolio, and,
- I saw this project as having real potential for professional development and maintenance of professional standards within our profession.
2. What do you want to achieve as a member of the project?
I quite simply wanted to participate, provide my view on project, help develop and implement a technology that works for us.
3. How are you progressing and what are your experiences so far?
Time is the biggest factor - I have to make a conscious effort and/or schedule a diary appointment to make sure I go onto pebblepad - the ideal would be if it were somehow incorporated into my daily work schedule (e.g. accessible via the applications I use). I can see real value in this programme, particularly as evidence for my ALIA CP standing. I have to stop trying to use it like Word - it's not a word processing software and does not do the same things.
Overall, my experience so far has been positive, it is easy to learn and use. It fulfils all my expectations of the project (and I can see a lot more uses for it too!)
4. How have you used your ePortfolio (practical applications)?
I've used the ePortfolio applications to:
- Set up a portfolio,
- Maintain my portfolio,
- Record my readings and learnings, and,
- Read what others are up to.
5. Almost 8 months have passed, what features of your eportfolio do you like the most and why?
I really like the simplicity to use (once you get the initial introduction) - other programmes are limited in what your options are. In the past, I have relied on word or bibliographic software like EndNote - none of them are designed specifically for this option and take a lot of "tweeking" to be viable.
I particularly like the way you can completely change the skin (display method) so easily to obtain a completely fresh look. I also like how you can give people permission to view your content (or not) as you choose. I am pleased that I can subscribe and maintain this e-portfolio for ever! It will be great to do it once and then share it as I require. Technology really is fantastic!!!!
6. If you had to create an 'elevator pitch' aimed at fellow librarians re your ePortfolio and professional development, what would you say?
E-portforlio (E-P) is an opportunity to save your information once yet use it repeatedly and in different formats. It incorporates the best of social with bibiographic network software and allows you to tailor your own site. E-P is a great means to keep track of your PD even including the option to plan your future development. Have a go, you'll quickly see the benefits!
